Drone Flying Workshop

Thursday, Friday, & Saturday, January 19, 20, & 21, 2017

The Research Laboratories of Archaeology will host a workshop on flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or “drones.” The workshop’s goal will be to teach participants all they need to know in order to get certified as drone pilots under FAA and state rules. (Anyone who flies as part of a business or job needs to be licensed.) The workshop will be taught in two parts, each 3-4 hours long. The first part will take place in a classroom, and the second will be “hands-on” and outdoors to give the participants actual experience in flying. Part 1 will be repeated on two separate days in order to maximize the possibilities for attendance. Part 2 will take place on a Saturday, in the morning and early afternoon. The instructor will be Doug Moulton of Charlotte Aerial Solutions. To see an example of his work, check out the 3D model of UNC’s Bell Tower.

Saturday, Jan 21, 9:00 am to noon • Part 2 (flying, outdoors) – Finley Fields*

Saturday, Jan 21, noon to 3:00 pm • Part 2 (flying, indoors if it rains) – Eddie Smith Field House*

*If we have rainy weather on Saturday, these locations may change. Participants, please be sure to CHECK your EMAIL Friday evening for an update.

Attendees will need to sign the following waiver prior to participating in the hands-on portion of the workshop on Saturday. The waiver has been reviewed and approved by UNC’s Office of University Counsel.

Practice Exam

A practice exam was compiled by Doug Moulton (Charlotte Aerial Solutions), which will be emailed to workshop participants along with an answer key. As a workshop participant you may keep the exam for your own use, but please do not to copy or distribute it to others.
