Each History from Things kit focuses on a few representative archaeological sites and includes the following materials:

  • teacher’s notebook containing background material, lesson plans, and suggestions for related fieldtrips;
  • cultural evidence related to daily life in the past, especially as it pertains to children (e.g., replica artifacts and ecofacts, excavation plans, photographs, illustrations, historic and ethnohistoric documents, artistic reconstructions, fictional narratives, multimedia);
  • contextual evidence (e.g., botanical specimens, maps, literature, art); and
  • materials for inquiry activities.

Many lessons and activities integrate social studies, science, math, and/or language arts content to help students meet competencies specified by the N.C. Standard Course of Study. Teachers can choose lessons and activities appropriate to students’ abilities and their own curricular goals.
